Natalie’s Butterflies

Butterflies Day 1

I’m super excited that this video has arrived! I have waited a month for these little guys to come. And now I have 5 caterpillars ready to become butterflies. I cannot wait to share with you all the growing up and fluttering away into the world when they are fully grown.

Butterflies Day 2

Day 2 of the butterflies, I haven’t noticed too much difference in their size but they are spinning silk which is amazing to watch. They have to stay in their tub for 7- 14 days before I can move them into a bigger enclosure. They also shed which is super strange. Their skeleton is called an exoskeleton which means when the caterpillar grows, it gets tighter and they need to shed to get bigger.

We finally have the names as well with the help from people’s amazing suggestions. They are called:
Brenda
Russell
Norman
Fancy
Eva

Butterflies Day 3

Day 3 and the butterflies have doubled in size overnight. Poor Brenda needed a helping hand because she was stuck to the top and hadn’t eaten in 1 day.
Cool fact about how to tell the difference between boy and girl- females have larger and rounded abdomen and males have straight-sided abdomen.

Day 4- Butterflies

After Brenda got stuck yesterday, she has been doing a lot better today and has finally grown. They are getting bigger every day- and I swear they grow more in the night.
Cool Fact- The caterpillar breathes through holes in its sides called spiracles. They are on each side of each segment. Fancy is just massive and defiantly gives the Hungry Caterpillar a run for its money.

Day 5- Butterflies

Day 5 of the butterflies. Finally got one out its little pot. They are so big now- and seem pretty happy

Day 6 & 7 – Butterflies

Day 6 & 7 of the butterflies. And they are absolutely massive now. I can’t believe how quick they have changed in a week.

Day 8-11 Butterflies

Day 8, 9,10, 11 of the butterflies. Two have started to cocoon. They are called Chrysalides. It’s amazing to see. They are just having from the lid but soon they will be transforming even more and in 3 days I move them to their new home and in 10 days I will have some beautiful butterflies

Day 12- 13

Day 12- 13 of the butterflies and it is moving day. They have all cocooned and are ready to be moved into their new home to start the next stage of their life- as butterflies
